It is now coming to that time of the year where people are nostalgic about what has happened in the year.
With that in mind, here are my favourite business and legal books of 2006:
Naked Conversations. which is written by Robert Scoble well known for his blog and Shel Israel who is an expert on innovation. The leading book on blogging for 2006 and I learnt a great deal on the subject from this book.
Chris Anderson's book The Long Tail: Possibly over hyped as a book( I found it a little short) but the economic theory is very important and this book should be read by all.
Ray Kuzweil's work "The Singularity is Near" has been referred to by Bill Gates and Richard Susskind. The message is totally radical and you will ask if you can live for ever. The economic theory of exponetial growth and the data presented in support will get you thinking. A tour de force.
Dan Pink's A Whole New Mind will give you food for thought on the rise of the right brain. He writes "To flourish in this age, we'll need to supplement our well-developed high tech abilities with aptitudes that are "high concept" and "high touch." High concept involves the ability to create artistic and emotional beauty, to detect patterns and opportunities, to craft a satisfying narrative, and to come up with inventions the world didn't know it was missing." This book has influenced the school my wife and I have chosen for our children.
Improvisational Negotiation by Jeffrey Krivis. As the author observes “In a world where relationships matter more than ever, mediation skills matter more than ever. Companies can locate anywhere. People can locate anywhere. Clients can stay with you or go with a competitor halfway around the globe. So whether you can manage employees or clients or both, it’s critical to learn the art of bringing harmony out of conflict” A very practical book for mediators. I did a review here on my blog.
"A User’s Guide to Copyright" by Michael Flint, Nicholas Fitzpatrick & Clive Thorne. The book is thorough and excellent on the topic of copyright. I also reviewed it for the EIRP which can be read here- Download PattenBRpress.pdf
Charles J. Glasser Jnr's International Libel & Privacy Handbook A very good book which has multiple authors in different countries exploring libel and defamation. Useful for bloggers and takes a worldwide approach. Here is my review on my blog. I would like to observe that Glasser's PR Company, PR Consulting Group did a first class job in promoting the book. I dealt with Daniel Strechay.
