Recommended podcast on Human Rights

An interesting podcats on the Charon QC dealing with the president of the Law Society, no less. This what attracted me and many other lawyers to the profession, the idea of doing good and helping those in need. The issue at hand is the fate of lawyers in Pakistan and as

Mr Andrew Holroyd, President of the Law Society, has said in the Press: “Solicitors have a duty to uphold the rule of law. The rule of law requires the judiciary and the legal profession to be independent and free from political interference. The Law Society continues to urge the government of Pakistan to return to an internationally recognised standard of the rule of law and to release and reinstate those lawyers and judges who remain in detention.”

Podcast on legal education with Charon QC

Check out this podcast from Charon QC on where he talks to Peter Crisp, Dean of BPP Law School, about the new power to award degrees. Peter explains why BPP did not talk to The Today programme the other morning and explains BPP plans for the LLB and LLM. He also addresses issues raised by others critical of the new powers awarded to BPP and expresses his vision of the future for legal education. Quite a scoop for Charon QC to get BPP to talk to him rather than Radio 4.

Podcast on mediation with Charon QC

CharonflagFurther to my 1st ever podcast with Charon QC which was completed in February of this year, I have returned to do another podcast this time on mediation with the maestro again. He asked some interesting and at times penetrating questions where we cover the whole ambit of mediation and ADR.

Cheers Charon QC.

IMPACT hit Charon QC podcast

Congratulations to my co-authors of the book on blogging which we are writing, namely Andrew Mills and Alex Newson of the respected IMPACT blog who have been interviewed by Charon QC for his latest podcast. Andrew and Alex work for Freeth Cartwright in the East Midlands and are key members of their IP team.

Charon QC interviews Nick Jarrett-Kerr

Njk07Charon QC continues the podcasts with Nick Jarrett-Kerr, formerly managing partner of Bevan Ashford and partner at Kerma Partners.

Nick is one of the leading UK advisers to law firms on leadership, management and strategy. He was a founder member of The Law Society’s Law Management Section and served as Chairman for two years and he has a special interest is law firm governance, partnership performance criteria and partner development.

I have met Nick and he is really a top notch consultant and this comes through in the podcast.

This is high end stuff and I would recommend all partners in law firms listen to this. Charon asks deceptively simple questions and the answers are very insightful and really relevant to law firm management in these competitive times.

The start begins with Charon asking what does a management partner do?

Nick gives a three fold answer namely cash, overall vision and ensures that the firm punches its weight in the market place.

Nick indicates that managing partners are "not so at good at management activities" and observes that the "softer stuff does not get so valued" but as Nick alludes to, one of the ways around is that very important management tasks in given in "bite sized chunks"

Great stuff and Charon & Nick explore about if management partners can be good rainmakers and about the issue of human capital management in law firms.

Charon even manages get Nick to make a reference to Rioja. Cheers Charon.

Charon QC is podcasting - How good are they?

CharonflagCharon QC has now completed a series of podcasts which have included interviews with Dan Hull, Tim Kevan and myself.

How do I assess the quality of the podcasts?

What I can say is that from my own experience of being interviewed, Charon was a very kind host who made a lot of effort to put me at ease and he showed a professional approach...he was really committed to get everything right about the interview.

With respect to the interview with Tim Kevan, Chraon asked good questions about blogging and Tim explained the liberating nature of blogging. Tim also gave revealing information about the balance of his blog between the law and other issues.

Tim is quite innovative(and for me an inspiration with his business flair) and he has co-founded a company creating webinars. He is quite right about the significance of blogging and how radical this is as a medium. I agree that blogging can really help a lawyer raise his or her profile.

The interview with Dan Hull is slower in tone which may reflect Dan's nature and again Charon explores the rationale behind blogging and also Dan's emphasis on client service. Consideration is given to workplace/balance which Dan gives robust views on which has attracted lively comment on Charon's blog.

Where Charon's strength lies in his interest in people. He is genuinely interested in his guests and finding out what makes them tick. Combine that with great editing skill and commitment (He took an assistant to Mayfair, London to ensure the quality of the content for the Dan Hull interview), you have a model for success.

Recommendations? As I know Charon himself recognises, the interviews with lawyers have focused on blogging and this will change. It would be desirable to see this evolve and to have broader discussions with guests on other legal issues.  Certainly I can see Charon's podcasts becoming the key audio content within the UK legal profession. No mean feat.

My lunch and podcast with Charon QC

I have just returned from West London where I met the well known law blogger, Charon QC.

Not only was I taken to lunch and had a glass of Rioja with him, I had the honour of doing a podcast with him .

It can be downloaded below and I discuss with Charon QC some things about myself and issues related to mediation and blogging.

What struck me about the podcast was how professional Charon and his team were in creating the actual material. It took 30 minutes to do a 7 minute podcast using iLife Software for a Mac.

Charon is very skilful, patient and determined in the preparation of his material. A clear natural in the broadcasting field.

P.S Charon's podcast is up on his blog here.

Recommended podcast - The dilemma of corporate blogging

PodTech has not only just acquired Robert Scoble but also has an interesting podcast exploring some of the issues related to corporate blogging.

“Unsanctioned corporate blogging is absolutely a tough call. And it happens in just about every organisation,” says Allen Weiner, a media analyst and Research Vice President with Gartner, Inc.  He was interviewed by PodTech’s Catherine Girardeau.
